Relationship Between Oral Health and Clinical Osteoporosis Among Hospitalized Patients with and Without Diabetes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Objective: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with poor oral health and osteoporosis (OP). The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between OP, periodontal disease (PD), and other dental and health outcomes in a cohort of hospitalized ...

Osteoporosis and Periodontitis [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Osteoporosis Reports, 2016
Osteoporosis and periodontitis are both diseases characterized by bone resorption. Osteoporosis features systemic degenerative bone loss that leads to loss of skeletal cancellous microstructure and subsequent fracture, whereas periodontitis involves local inflammatory bone loss, following an infectious breach of the alveolar cortical bone, and it may ...

Mesoporous Bioactive Glasses: A Powerful Tool in Tissue Engineering and Drug Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work is a comprehensive revision of bioactive glasses (BGs), pioneered by Prof. L.L. Hench, which are key in bone repair and regenerative medicine. Sol–gel methods and mesoporous designs enhanced their bioactivity, ions, and drug delivery. BGs now support gene therapy and 3D‐printed scaffolds, enabling personalized, multifunctional treatments in ...

Mechanical Interactions Impact the Functions of Immune Cells and Their Application in Immunoengineering

open access: yesAdvanced Therapeutics, EarlyView.
This review covers the mechanical forces experienced by immune cells through cell–cell and cell–extracellular matrix interactions and how these forces influence their receptors and functions. These relationships between forces and cellular functions can be exploited using engineering techniques to modify the physical properties of materials for novel ...

Oral plaque from Type 2 diabetic patients reduces the clonogenic capacity of dental pulp-derived mesenchymal stem cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major metabolic disease and a key epigenetic risk factor for the development of additional clinical complications. Among them, periodontitis (PD), a severe inflammatory disease ascribable to a dysregulated physiology and ...

Sleep Deprivation Aggravates Periodontitis Through Trigeminal‐Periodontal Neuroimmune Pathway Mediated by the AChE‐ACh‐α7nAChR Axis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sleep deprivation (SD) exacerbates ligature‐induced periodontitis (LIP) through the trigeminal nerve‐periodontal neuroimmune pathway mediated by the acetylcholinesterase (AChE)‐acetylcholine (ACh)‐α7 nicotinic receptor (α7nAChR) axis. While electroacupuncture (EA) alleviates the condition of LIP combined with SD by activating the α7nAChR.
