Mediators and regulation of peristalsis

Current Opinion in Gastroenterology, 1999
Peristalsis is the main postprandial propulsive activity of the gut. It is mediated by neurons of the enteric nervous system, which form an integrated circuit composed of sensory neurons, modulatory interneurons, and motor neurons to the circular and longitudinal muscle layers.

Prostaglandins /PGs/ and peristalsis

Prostaglandins and Medicine, 1981
The effect of some inhibitors of PG-synthesis /Aspirin, Indomethacin and Suprofen/ on the small intestine peristalsis and the PG-like activity in mice was investigated. It was found that the three drugs examined in the applied doses did not affect the small intestine peristalsis but they significantly decreased the PG-like activity.

Optical peristalsis

Physics Today, 2003
We describe an efficient method for transporting and rearranging mesoscopic objects in three dimensions using short repetitive sequences of holographic optical trapping patterns. Material transport in this process is analogous to peristaltic pumping, with the configurations of optical traps mimicking the states of a physical peristaltic pump.
