Diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL) is an invasive procedure, mostly of historical significance, used to diagnose hemoperitoneum or bowel injury in patients who have experienced blunt or penetrating abdominal trauma. This procedure is now primarily used in hemodynamically unstable patients cared for in resource-constrained environments to determine the ...

The concept of lavage as an effective means for detecting intraperitoneal injury secondary to trauma has been adequately demonstrated. The value of peritoneal lavage is especially reflected in the statistics reporting approximately 20 per cent incidence of unnecessary celiotomies when physical examination findings alone are used; whereas the number of ...

A technique for peritoneal lavage which has increased accuracy and eliminated complications is described. A curved incision is made to one side of the umbilicus at the level of the infraumbilical ring extending over the linea alba for 4 cm. The advantages of the site are its avascularity, paucity of peritoneal fat, and adherence of the peritoneum.

Diagnostic peritoneal lavage in acute peritonitis
The American Journal of Surgery, 1992Fifty patients were studied prospectively to determine the value of diagnostic peritoneal lavage in the evaluation of acute peritonitis. Forty-five patients had a clinical diagnosis of acute peritonitis based on physical findings, and 5 patients were normal control subjects.

Peritoneal Lavage with Low Morbidity
Clinical Toxicology, 1979Peritoneal lavage has proven to be a useful tool for evaluating abdominal trauma. However, morbidity levels associated with the technique have inhibited its wide acceptance. A technique has been developed that avoids the complications associated with use of a standard dialysis trocar or a mini-laparotomy.

Peritoneal lavage is a useful adjunct to physical examination and to other traditional means of assessing the patient with potential intraabdominal injury. The procedure is safe in experienced hands and may be easily and rapidly performed with a minimum of equipment. The information that lavage provides may spare some patients an exploratory laparotomy

A 5-year retrospective review of 3,503 diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL) patients was conducted, identifying 48 (13%) blunt trauma patients who had a DPL WBC count greater than or equal to 500/mm3. The mean DPL WBC count was 1,646 +/- 2,275. Twenty (42%) of these patients were observed and discharged without subsequent operation or morbidity ...
