Bizarre Complications of Peritoneovenous Shunts

open access: yesAnnals of Surgery, 1981
Implantable peritoneovenous shunts have facilitated the management of patients with medically intractable ascites. The more commonly reported complications occur with an incidence of 20-50%. Rare and problematic complications are becoming increasingly frequent.

Percutaneous peritoneovenous shunt positioning: technique and preliminary results

open access: yes, 2002
Nine peritoneovenous shunts were positioned by percutaneous technique in seven patients with advanced malignancy causing severe refractory ascites, and in two patients with hepatic cirrhosis (one with hepatocarcinoma).

Palliative Treatment of Malignant Refractory Ascites by Positioning of Denver Peritoneovenous Shunt

open access: yes, 2002
Malignant ascites is relatively common in patients with certain types of end-stage cancer. Traditional treatments based on fluid and salt restriction and diuretic therapy often are not able to contain neoplastic ascites.

Management of portal hypertension and ascites in polycystic liver disease

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 39, Issue 11, Page 2024-2033, November 2019., 2019
Abstract Patients suffering from polycystic liver disease may develop Hepatic Venous Outflow Obstruction, Portal Vein Obstruction and/or Inferior Caval Vein Syndrome because of cystic mass effect. This can cause portal hypertension, leading to ascites, variceal haemorrhage or splenomegaly.

PARPi Combining Nanoparticle LIN28B siRNA for the Management of Malignant Ascites

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 16, 18 March 2026.
This study demonstrates that co‐inhibition of LIN28B and PARP using siLin28b/DSSP@lip‐PEG‐FA nanoparticles in combination with the PARP inhibitor BMN673 effectively suppresses the accumulation of malignant ascites associated with advanced cancers.

Tunneled Peritoneal Catheter Placement in Palliation of Malignant Ascites: A Study with Two Different Types of Catheters

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
Objective(s). Malignant ascites (MA) is abnormal accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity and has negative effects on the quality of life. The purpose of this retrospective study is to explore feasibility, safety and efficacy of tunneled peritoneal catheter placement using both peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis catheters in the palliation of ...

Clinical Outcomes and Healthcare Costs of CART Versus Paracentesis for Malignant Ascites: A Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study in Japan

open access: yesCancer Medicine, Volume 15, Issue 1, January 2026.
Cell‐free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy had lower mortality and in‐hospital costs than paracentesis in metastatic cancer, particularly in males, patients with serum albumin ≤ 2.5 g/dL, and those with non‐gastrointestinal cancer. ABSTRACT Background Paracentesis temporarily relieves malignant ascites but causes hypoalbuminemia.

Combined Chylothorax and Chylous Ascites Complicating Liver Transplantation: A Report of a Case and Review of the Literature

open access: yesCase Reports in Transplantation, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
Chyle leaks may occur as a result of surgical intervention. Chyloperitoneum, or chylous ascites after liver transplantation, is rare and the development of chylothorax after abdominal surgery is even more rare. With increasingly aggressive surgical resections, particularly in the retroperitoneum, the incidence of chyle leaks is expected to increase in ...

Peritoneovenous Shunt Occlusion

open access: yesAnnals of Surgery, 1984
Electronic pressure testing of every LeVeen valve has practically eliminated mechanical malfunction as a cause of shunt failure. Nonetheless, failures do occur and in a series of 240 cases, early or late shunt failure occurred in 29 patients. Thirty-five additional cases of failures were either referred by other physicians over a period of 6 years or ...
