Nutritional properties, traditional uses and potential new applications for the sotol plant (Asparagaceae, Convallarioideae): A review

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Sotol (Dasylirion spp.) is a resilient desert plant that sustains ecosystems, cultures and livelihoods in Chihuahua Desert. Our review highlights its nutritional properties, traditional uses and potential new applications in food, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy and water remediation. By synthesizing evidence across disciplines, we show how sotol can

Perlite concrete: a review

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2023
Abstract The thermal resistance of concrete significantly influences the energy consumption of the building. Consequently, concrete with high thermal resistance can contribute to the envelope’s energy efficiency. In order to obtain the thermal conductivity performance required for the passive house standard using the principles of ...

Influence of Heat Treatment and Scan Rotation on the Microstructure of Hot Work Tool Steel Manufactured using Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
The study investigates the influence of heat treatment and scan rotation on the microstructure of a modified H13 tool steel manufactured using laser powder bed fusion. Key findings include the refinement of prior austenite grains (PAGs) due to recrystallization and carbide pinning, and the significant impact of scan rotation on the size distribution of

Surface Titrations of Perlite Suspensions

open access: yesJournal of Colloid and Interface Science, 1998
The surface charge behaviour of unexpanded and expanded perlite samples in KNO3 and NaCl solutions were investigated as a function of pH and ionic strength. The solutions of KNO3 and NaCl ranging from 10(-3) to 1.0 M were used. The potentiometric titration method was used to determine the surface charge of perlite samples.

Reduced fertilization regimes could boost biocontrol service without reducing crop yield

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Fertilization level influences pest control effectiveness in tomato crops. High fertilization increases plant growth and aphid density but reduces the performance of the parasitoid Aphidius ervi. In contrast, the predator Adalia bipunctata maintains consistent aphid suppression regardless of fertilization regime.

The potential for using different substrates in green roofs

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Engineering and Landscape Management, 2023
This research was carried out in Izmir-Turkiye and investigated the potential of using three different substrates (cocopeat, loofah and perlite) in the design of green roofs with succulents (Crassula ovata) in aim to improve their performance.

Enhancing the vase life of cut roses through spectral optimisation during greenhouse cultivation

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, EarlyView.
Here, we examined three red‐to‐blue (R:B) light emitting diode (LED) ratios (90:10, 80:20 and 70:30) in two cut rose cultivars. All treatments enhanced photosynthesis, with 90:10 showing the strongest effects—raising chlorophyll, carotenoids, anthocyanins and carbohydrate levels, and extending vase life by up to 30%.

One-Step Synthesis of TiO2/Perlite Composites by Flame Spray Pyrolysis and Their Photocatalytic Behavior

open access: yesInternational Journal of Photoenergy, 2013
TiO2/perlite composites were prepared via facile one-step flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) route. Titanium alkoxide (TIPO) and expanded perlite were used as Ti source and substrate, respectively.

Insights from controlled, comparative experiments highlight the limitations of using BSMV and FoMV for virus‐enabled reverse genetics in rice

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, EarlyView.
Virus‐enabled reverse genetics (VERG) enables transient gene expression modulation in plants but its efficacy varies across species. We evaluated the efficacy of barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) and foxtail mosaic virus (FoMV) for virus‐induced gene silencing (VIGS) and virus‐mediated overexpression (VOX) in rice (Oryza sativa).
