PERMAFROST: A REVIEW

Geological Society of America Bulletin, 1954
Permafrost is estimated to occur in areas totaling about 26 per cent of the land area of the earth. Permafrost is as much as 2000 feet thick in Siberia and 1300 feet thick in Alaska, where its minimum temperature is −12°C and −10°C respectively. As it is defined on the basis of temperature, its composition varies over wide limits.

Microbial life in permafrost

Advances in Space Research, 2004
Hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic methanogenesis was measured at temperatures between 5 and -16.5 degrees C with H14CO3- and 14CH3CO2- as substrates in Siberian permafrost soils. The rate of methane formation was reduced approximately 2-fold over the temperature range from 5 to -1.8 degrees C.

Earthflows on permafrost

Polar Geography, 1996
Abstract Earthflows are discussed that are characteristic of various regions where unconsolidated sediments overlie permafrost. The shape and genesis of the earthflows are examined, as are the processes generating and associated with them. The article draws upon field work from the Bovanenko region of the Yamal Peninsula, a major area of permafrost ...

Hazards related to permafrost and to permafrost degradation

2011
Rockfalls ( 0.1-1 M m3) can threaten valley inhabitants at very long distance from the source area. Permafrost is present in Alpine rockwalls at high elevation (e.g. above c. 3000 m and 3500 m a.s.l. on north- and south-facing slopes, respectively). Its climatically-driven degradation is probably one of the main triggers of recent, present and future ...

Airfields on Permafrost

Journal of the Air Transport Division, 1957
In this paper the author outlines the special problems of constructing airfield pavements on permafrost foundations. Particular attention is devoted to problems of construction in areas of discontinuous permafrost, the importance of non-frost-susceptibility soils is shown, and means of combating degradation of pavements are carefully explained.
