Permafrost in Mongolia

2021
In this chapter, the general characteristics of permafrost and cryogenic features are described, and the degradation of permafrost is simply analyzed too. The permafrost in Mongolia lies at the southern edge of Siberian permafrost with different permafrost zones.

Thawing Permafrost

2020
This book provides a cross-disciplinary overview of permafrost and the carbon cycle by providing an introduction into the geographical distribution of permafrost, with a focus on the distribution of permafrost and its soil carbon reservoirs. The chapters explain the basic physical properties and processes of permafrost soils: ice, mineral and organic ...

Bacteria in Permafrost [PDF]

open access: possible, 2008
Significant numbers of viable ancient microorganisms are known to be present within the permafrost. They have been isolated in both polar regions from the cores up to 400 m deep and ground temperatures of -27 C. The age of the cells corresponds to the longevity of the permanently frozen state of the soils, with the oldest cells dating back to {approx}3

Climate and permafrost

Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, 1993
AbstractData from Yakutia, Siberia, indicate that permafrost has been generally stable for the last 300,000 years. Historic records indicate climatic variability in the last 150 years and predict that, in comparison with the 1980s, winters will be colder and summers warmer in the early part of the twenty‐first century.

Piles in Permafrost [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of Cold Regions Engineering, 1987
Piles have been installed in permafrost in the northern hemisphere for various engineering purposes. To date, there is a large amount of published information on piles in permafrost which has led to accepted design practices. However, there are no standards for designing or testing piles.

Microbial life in permafrost

Advances in Space Research, 2004
Hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic methanogenesis was measured at temperatures between 5 and -16.5 degrees C with H14CO3- and 14CH3CO2- as substrates in Siberian permafrost soils. The rate of methane formation was reduced approximately 2-fold over the temperature range from 5 to -1.8 degrees C.
