Βehavior of underground energy pipelines under permanent ground displacements
Energy Systems, 2021The seismic performance of oil and natural gas steel pipelines embedded in earth slopes presents great uncertainty related both to the earthquake shaking characteristics and to the natural heterogeneity of geomaterials. Slope movements and landslides in general constitute a significant risk to pipelines because they can cause permanent deformations and

Study on permanent ground displacement induced by seismic liquefaction
Computers and Geotechnics, 1987Abstract Permanent ground displacement as induced by seismic liquefaction was measured in the area which was recently hit by an earthquake. The measurement was carried out by comparing two aerophotographs of the area which were taken before and after the tremor.

Improving Structural Response to Permanent Ground Displacement
Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction, 2001Structural damage due to permanent ground displacement is a common occurrence during seismic events. Light-frame structures, typical of residential construction, seem both particularly susceptible to and easily reinforced against moderate ground failure. Because the foundations of these structures typically receive little or no engineering attention, a

Fragility curves for masonry structures submitted to permanent ground displacements and earthquakes
Natural Hazards, 2014Usually, the vulnerability of structures is treated considering only one single hazard, for example either seismic hazard or ground instability. However, historical monuments, cultural heritage structures or old masonry structures can be affected, over the past centuries of existence, by a succession of different hazards.

Permanent Displacement Distribution From Strong Ground Motion Records of the 2023 Mw7.7 Earthquake.
2023One of the most damaging earthquake effects occurring in the vicinity of the fault trace is fling step, also known as permanent displacement. However, due to the fact that the standard filtering techniques eliminate the low frequency portions of the motion, the permanent displacements are not seen on the displacement time histories derived from the ...

Estimating Permanent Ground Displacement from Near-Fault Strong-Motion Accelerograms
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2007This study presents a three-phase algorithm that uses the discrete wavelet transform (dwt) to make the baseline correction to near-fault ground-motion accelerogram and to estimate permanent ground displacement. The developed algorithm is applied to the near-fault ground-motion data collected from the 1999 Chi- Chi, Taiwan, earthquake.

Behavior of full-scale concrete segmented pipelines under permanent ground displacements
SPIE Proceedings, 2010Concrete pipelines are one of the most popular underground lifelines used for the transportation of water resources. Unfortunately, this critical infrastructure system remains vulnerable to ground displacements during seismic and landslide events. Ground displacements may induce significant bending, shear, and axial forces to concrete pipelines and ...

Journal of Earthquake and Tsunami, 2018
A conventional “recipe” for strong ground motion prediction has been applied to the seismic fault (deep fault; located within seismogenic layer). In order to perform assessments of strong ground motions and permanent displacements at sites very close to the fault trace, we proposed the method of modeling that takes the entire ruptured fault from the ...

Earthquake Damage Caused by Liquefaction Induced Permanent Ground Displacement
1987ABSTRACT The authors had previously reported on the liquefaction induced permanent ground displacements during the 1964 Niigata and the 1983 Nihonkai-Chubu earthquakes. In the present paper, the causal relationship of the permanent displacement with the damage to buried gas pipes, foundation piles and bridges is studied.
