PERMANENT MAGNETS used in apparatus often are subjected to demagnetization by current surges or stray fields. This weakens the magnet and changes the adjustment. Magnets usually are stabilized against such demagnetizing forces by partial demagnetization.

Permanent magnet materials recently have been developed with characteristics radically different from those of previous materials, the carbon, cobalt, and chromium steels. In this paper, the essential properties of these new materials are discussed and are compared with the corresponding properties of the older materials.

COMPACT PERMANENT-MAGNET MACHINES
Electric Machines & Power Systems, 1997ABSTRACT The availability of new high-field permanent-magnet materials has created opportunities for novel topologies of electrical machines with advantageous characteristics such as high efficiency and good power/weight ratio. A disc-type arrangement, with slotless winding and axially-directed flux in the air gap, has particularly short axial length ...

High-performance permanent magnets
Naturwissenschaften, 2000High-performance permanent magnets (pms) are based on compounds with outstanding intrinsic magnetic properties as well as on optimized microstructures and alloy compositions. The most powerful pm materials at present are RE-TM intermetallic alloys which derive their exceptional magnetic properties from the favourable combination of rare earth metals ...

The Cycloid Permanent Magnetic Gear
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2006This paper presents a new permanent-magnet gear based on the cycloid gearing principle. which normally is characterized by an extreme torque density and a very high gearing ratio. An initial design of the proposed magnetic gear was designed, analyzed, and optimized with an analytical model regarding torque density.

An outline is given of the state of the art in permanent magnet technology with a brief discussion of the future perspectives opened up by the new materials. There is a growing demand for better performances associated with the expansion of applications and reduction in prices. The general principles that govern permanent magnet behaviour are discussed

Intermetallics for permanent magnets
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1993Going back as far as 1931, it is shown by the examples MnAl, Fe-Nd, Fe-Nd-B, and Fe(-Ti)-Sm how the history of permanent magnet materials might have evolved differently if hints had been heeded that were discernible long before a particular magnet development actually began.

Abstract In the last few decades, as the energy density of permanent magnets has improved, there has been a large increase in the use of permanent-magnet materials in many nontraditional devices and also in energy-conversion systems such as motors and generators.
