Nondestructive permittivity measurement of substrates

IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 1996
The complex permittivity, /spl kappa/'[1-j(tan /spl delta/)], of a thin, flat dielectric is calculated from the characteristics of the H/sub 011/ resonance in a cylindrical cavity, with the specimen inserted on the central transverse plane. Dielectric constants from 1 to 300 have been measured with errors less than 1%.

Simple Nondestructive Method for the Measurement of Complex Permittivity

IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 1974
A simple nondestructive method is presented for the measurement of the complex permittivity ?r of materials. The reflection coefficient ? of a flanged open-ended rectangular waveguide placed, next to a flat large sample is computed by a variational method as a function of the dielectric constant.

A bridge for the measurement of permittivity

Proceedings of the IEE - Part B: Radio and Electronic Engineering, 1956
A description is given of a null method for the measurement of the complex permittivity of dielectrics. The direct admittance of a 3-terminal capacitor with the sample as dielectric is measured as a complex capacitance, the two components being indicated directly on two 3-terminal variable air capacitors.

Measurement of permeability and permittivity of ferrites

Measurement Science and Technology, 1990
The dielectric and magnetic properties of some ferrite materials have been measured by four widely different methods. These are measurements in waveguide at 14 GHz using a slotted line approach; measurements in waveguide using S parameter data; the open resonator at 24 GHz (the solution of the equations is presented); and an oblique reflection method ...

Broadband measurements of permittivity and permeability

1983 Eighth International Conference on Infrared and Millimeter Waves, 1983
Theory and system designs from multiple band measurements of permittivity and permeability will be presented. Measured data will be presented for various microwave absorbers from 5–100 GHz. An analysis of system errors is also presented.

On permittivity measurement by a resonance method

Radiophysics and Quantum Electronics, 1996
In a quasioptical approximation we develop a theory of an open cavity with a dielectric plate placed normally to the cavity axis. We find conditions under which some natural frequencies of the cavity are practically independent of the plate position in the cavity.

Techniques and applications of permittivity measurements

Proceedings of Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena - CEIDP '96, 2002
The introduction of a fundamentally new microwave measurement technology has provided the petroleum, food and chemical processing industries with a method of real time, full stream process monitoring. This technology, known as oscillator load pull, is based on detecting changes in the permittivity of the materials being examined.

Accurate permittivity measurement of PTFE

2018 Australian Microwave Symposium (AMS), 2018
The requirements for applications such as 5G or phased arrays are becoming more and more demanding, requiring more accurate material data to achieve the required goals. Here it is shown that only simultaneous measurement of the relevant material data with PTFE leads to reliable results.

Free space measurement of permittivity

Twelfth International Conference on Antennas and Propagation (ICAP 2003), 2003
This paper presents a free space technique for the measurement of the complex permittivity of a slice of dielectric sample. The experimental set up is described and the technique validated by measurements on well characterised dielectrics at J band whereupon it is concluded that the method would be suitable for use in the millimetre wave band. A spectrometer for the measurement of complex permittivity

Journal of Physics E: Scientific Instruments, 1972
The spectrometer uses an unbalanced AC bridge and records the real or imaginary component of permittivity on a chart recorder over the frequency range from about 1 Hz to 1 MHz. The measured sensitivity extends to values of loss tangent of about 10-3 although the ultimate sensitivity is expected to be higher.
