Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2021
This study investigated the microplastic (MPs) contamination of the mussels, P. viridis and P. perna of different sizes, and their environment viz. water and sediment. MPs were recovered from the soft tissues of both species. The mean abundance of MPs ranges from 0.87 ± 0.55 to 10.02 ± 4.15 items/individual; 0.1 ± 0.03 to 2.05 ± 0.33 items/g; 31.57 ± 7.

Invasive species fouling Perna perna (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) mussel farms
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2022Invasive, fouling species increase management costs and reduce mussel growth, which jeopardizes mariculture. We studied the distribution of eight invasive species in Santa Catarina, the leading mussel producer in Brazil. Our goals were to determine their spatial distribution and prevalence on farm structures (buoys, long lines, and mussel socks), as ...

Free radicals in the Perna perna mussel shell
Radiation Physics and Chemistry, 2021Abstract This is the first characterization of free radicals in shells of the Perna perna mussel. Six free radicals produced only by X-rays and two produced by X-rays and ultraviolet rays were detected. The free radicals are stable because detection was nine months after irradiation. The shells consist only of aragonite.

Pigment alterations in the brown mussel Perna perna
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2008Potential sex and/or gametogenic stage differences in the metabolism of chlorophyll-a and carotenoids in the brown mussel Perna perna of southern Brazil were studied using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Carotenoids derived directly from diet (phytoplankton) were fucoxanthin plus diatoxanthin (diatoms), alloxanthin (cryptophytes) and ...

Vacuum Cooling of Cooked Mussels (Perna perna)
Food Science and Technology International, 2006Mussels pass through a thermal treatment during industrial processing with hot water or steam and then are pre-cooled before the manual extraction of the meat. This pre-cooling is classically accomplished by the immersion of the cooked mussels in cold water.
