This chapter explores the role of slavery in several regions of the Persian Empire. The first section looks at elite estates in Anatolia, in particular examining the estate of Asidates discussed in Xenophon’s Anabasis (7.8.7–22), and shows that slave labour likely played a prominent role in their cultivation.
