Evaluation of satellite rainfall estimates over Ethiopian river basins [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2011
High resolution satellite-based rainfall estimates (SREs) have enormous potential for use in hydrological applications, particularly in the developing world as an alternative to conventional rain gauges which are typically sparse.

A Thermodynamically Informed Precipitation Retrieval Method Based on FY‐4A/AGRI Multi‐Channel Infrared Observations Over Complex Terrain

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 20, 28 October 2025.
Abstract Accurate precipitation monitoring is critical for hazard risk mitigation in regions characterized by complex terrain. To address these challenges, this study proposes a two‐stage framework that integrates thermodynamic controls, including cloud top brightness temperature (BT) from FengYun‐4A geostationary Multi‐Infrared observations And ...

Probabilistic Near‐Real‐Time Retrievals of Rain Over Africa Using Deep Learning

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 20, 28 October 2025.
Abstract We introduce Rain over Africa (RoA), a public retrieval algorithm providing near‐real‐time precipitation estimates over the African continent. The retrievals are based on Meteosat thermal infrared observations. Therefore, rain can be monitored constantly, minutes after input data dissemination.

Evaluation of Machine Learning Models to Improve Daily Precipitation Estimations From Orbital Remote Sensing and Reanalysis Data

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 45, Issue 12, October 2025.
Combined machine learning methods improve satellite‐based data (IMERG) in Brazil to produce accurate daily precipitation estimations in Brazil (IMERG BraMaL‐D) without dependence on ground‐based data. Calibration on the accumulated daily scale for a monthly scale is more efficient than monthly calibration.

Global Increase of Tropical Cyclone Precipitation Rate Toward Coasts

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 17, 16 September 2025.
Abstract Tropical cyclones (TCs) induced precipitation poses a critical threat to coastal regions. In the context of global warming and humidification, it remains to be clarified whether coastal exposure to TC‐induced precipitation has a detectable response. Based on multi‐source data sets in the past four decades, this study investigates the coastward

Performance of High Resolution Satellite Rainfall Products over Data Scarce Parts of Eastern Ethiopia

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2015
Accurate estimation of rainfall in mountainous areas is necessary for various water resource-related applications. Though rain gauges accurately measure rainfall, they are rarely found in mountainous regions and satellite rainfall data can be used as an ...
