The Persistent Mystery of Adenovirus Persistence
Trends in Microbiology, 2016Human adenovirus (HAdV) often causes acute, lytic infections which are readily recapitulated in culture models. Alternatively, HAdV can establish persistent infections which have been difficult to reproduce in cell culture and are poorly understood. A recent study reveals how HAdV can re-task the host cell antiviral response to establish persistence.

Summary: When human capital accumulation generates pecuniary externalities across professions, and capital markets are imperfect, persistent inequality in utility and consumption is inevitable in any steady state. This is true irrespective of the degree of divisibility in investments.

The Persistence Space in Multidimensional Persistent Homology
2013Multidimensional persistent modules do not admit a concise representation analogous to that provided by persistence diagrams for real-valued functions. However, there is no obstruction for multidimensional persistent Betti numbers to admit one. Therefore, it is reasonable to look for a generalization of persistence diagrams concerning those properties ...

Summary: This paper demonstrates that the behavior of the conventional Phelps- Taylor model of overlapping wage contracts stands in stark contrast with important features of U.S. macro data for inflation and output. In particular, the Phelps-Taylor specification implies far too little inflation persistence.

This chapter examines the concept of inflation persistence in macroeconomic theory. It begins by defining persistence — emphasizing the difference between reduced-form and structural persistence. It then examines a number of empirical measures of reduced-form persistence, considering the possibility that persistence may have changed over time.
