Personal Finances and Voting Behavior

Four major shortcomings of existing studies of the presumed linkage between personal economic circumstances and voting decisions are discerned. These shortcomings leave open the possibility that hypotheses premised on "rational economic man" which have received minimal empirical support to this point may nonetheless be valid.

District Complexity and the Personal Vote

Incumbents tend to win with higher margins in less ideologically constrained districts. I argue that incumbents are advantaged by this electoral landscape in part because they work harder to cultivate a personal vote. Utilizing data on earmarks, I find that despite winning with a larger margin of victory, these incumbents act much like their colleagues

To examine whether patients with dementia voted in the 2000 US Presidential Election, the authors surveyed 75 caregivers of patients with dementia. A substantial portion of patients with mild to moderate dementia voted on their own at a voting booth.
