Invisible Labor and the “Ghost Particle”: Underground Physics at the Kolar Gold Fields**

open access: yesBerichte zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte, EarlyView.
Abstract When cosmic rays—high‐energy particles from outer space—encounter the Earth's atmosphere, they produce particles called neutrinos. To detect them, physicists go underground inside deep mines where the overlying rock can filter out the cosmic‐ray background radiation.

Estimation of reproduction numbers in real time: Conceptual and statistical challenges

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series A (Statistics in Society), Volume 185, Issue S1, Page S112-S130, November 2022., 2022
Abstract The reproduction number R$$ R $$ has been a central metric of the COVID‐19 pandemic response, published weekly by the UK government and regularly reported in the media. Here, we provide a formal definition and discuss the advantages and most common misconceptions around this quantity.

The Curious Concept That Almost Nobody Seemed to Care About at First: Virtual Particles in the Post‐War Period**

open access: yesBerichte zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte, EarlyView.
Abstract Short‐lived, unobservable, and not subject to the usual rules of conservation of energy and momentum, virtual particles—an integral part of the conceptual framework of quantum field theory (QFT)—exhibit a number of curious characteristics which, in recent decades, have in part fueled important discussions about their ontological status ...

Metal halide perovskite for room temperature gamma‐ray spectrum detection

open access: yesInformation &Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Integrating recent advancements in metal halide perovskite (MHP) for room temperature gamma‐ray spectroscopy, we provide a comprehensive overview of the methods for growing high‐quality MHP crystals, along with fundamental insights into the structure of gamma‐ray devices and the defect characteristics of MHPs.

At the far end of everything: A likely Ahrensburgian presence in the far north of the Isle of Skye, Scotland

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A Late Upper Paleolithic (LUP) site containing Ahrensburgian‐type stone tools has been discovered at South Cuidrach, Isle of Skye, Scotland. Together with a group of intertidal stone circular alignments also recently discovered on the island, this new evidence for the occupation of northern Scotland also represents the most northerly LUP site ...

High‐throughput calculation of large spin Hall conductivity in heavy‐metal‐based antiperovskite compounds

open access: yesMaterials Genome Engineering Advances, EarlyView.
The present work establishes high‐throughput database (more than 4500 structures) of SHC in antiperovskites and screens 295 structurally stable compounds and identifies 24 compounds with intrinsic SHC exceeding 500 (ℏ/e) (Ω⁻1 cm⁻1), which is crucial for designing future electric and spintronic devices.

X-ray Fluctuations from the Slim Disk [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2000
The responses of perturbations added into the optically thick, advection-dominated accretion disk (ADAD), what we call the slim disk (SD), are investigated through numerical simulations. Although it is proposed that the SD is thermally stable, I find that a perturbation added into the disk is not rapidly damped and moves through the disk in its free ...

Major and Trace Element Composition Differences Revealed in Porcine Intestine by Dynamic Analysis and MeV Ion Microscopy

open access: yesphysica status solidi (a), EarlyView.
Herein, C, N, and Ca concentration images in dry porcine intestine are used to determine trace element concentrations ex vivo. Physiologically relevant concentrations in biological tissue, in the in vivo, state are of the order of μmol L−1 and mmol L−1.

Optimizing Phononic Crystal Waveguides for Enhanced Surface Acoustic Wave Confinement

open access: yesphysica status solidi (b), EarlyView.
A phononic crystal consisting of periodic arrays of nanofabricated holes on a surface can form a metamaterial‐like layer with properties different from the host material. Exploiting these surface properties, an optimized waveguide geometry is designed for surface acoustic waves using twofold elliptical cylinder inclusions to create a slow region that ...

Structure and Migration Mechanisms of Oxygen Interstitial Defects in β‐Ga2O3

open access: yesphysica status solidi (b), EarlyView.
The structures and diffusion mechanisms of interstitial oxygen in different charge states in β‐Ga2O3 are extensively studied using density functional theory. The results provide a detailed map of the potential energy surface for oxygen interstitials in β‐Ga2O3 and demonstrate how these ions migrate between different rings in the structure.
