Phylogenomic investigation of lampreys (Petromyzontiformes)

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2023
The history of lamprey evolution has been contentious due to limited morphological differentiation and limited genetic data. Available data has produced inconsistent results, including in the relationship among northern and southern species and the monophyly of putative clades.

Parasites and microbial infections of lamprey (order Petromyzontiformes Berg 1940): A review of existing knowledge and recent studies

open access: yesJournal of Great Lakes Research, 2021
Abstract The 48 described species of parasitic and non-parasitic lamprey within the order Petromyzontiformes span much of the globe. Although the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is an unwanted invasive in the Laurentian Great Lakes, most lamprey species are of ecological and cultural value, and of conservation concern.

Phylogeny of Living Parasitic Lampreys (Petromyzontiformes) Based on Morphological Data

Copeia, 2003
Abstract Relationships among the 18 extant species of parasitic lamprey (Petromyzontiformes) were determined using a cladistic analysis of 32 mainly morphological characters. Because previous analyses support all known fossils as phylogenetically older or the same age as living lampreys, a composite agnathan fossil was used as an outgroup.

Oral Fimbriae and Papillae in Parasitic Lampreys (Petromyzontiformes)

Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2003
There are 38 species of living lampreys, 18 parasitic and 20 nonparasitic. The parasitic species feed as adults, while the nonparasitic do not. The taxonomy and systematics of the living lampreys is based primarily on dentition characters. Since the number of oral fimbriae and oral papillae have never been systematically investigated in lampreys, we ...

Sneak male mating tactics between lampreys (Petromyzontiformes) exhibiting alternative life‐history strategies

Journal of Fish Biology, 2013
Interspecific sneak male mating tactics between paired lamprey species are described for the first time. Although alternative mating tactics among petromyzontids have been described previously, including intraspecific sneak males, the presence of sneak male tactics between parasitic and non‐parasitic forms suggests that high levels of gene flow between

First Record of the Silver Lamprey, Ichthyomyzon unicuspis (Petromyzontiformes: Petromyzontidae), from Arkansas

American Midland Naturalist, 2011
Abstract We report the Silver Lamprey (Ichthyomyzon unicupis) from Arkansas for the first time. Fifteen adult I. unicuspis attached to paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) were collected in Apr. 2005 from the White River near the confluence of the Black River, Independence and Jackson counties. Twelve (80%) of the I.
