Osteoclastoma of the petrous temporal bone
The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 1978This paper has described an unusual case of osteoclastoma of the petrous temporal bone which presented with multiple cranial neuropathies. A radical course of radiotherapy reversed the neuropathies but it is too early to comment on possible cure.

Computer‐Aided Surgery in the Petrous Bone
The Laryngoscope, 1999AbstractObjectives: We demonstrate that computer‐assisted frameless stereotactic navigation with the ISG/ELEKTA Viewing Wand system in the petrous bone is routinely possible with sufficient application accuracy. Methods: High‐resolution computed tomography imaging is done with a dedicated structure attached to the mouthpiece of the Vogele‐Bale‐Hohner ...

On the functional morphology of the human petrous bone
American Journal of Anatomy, 1984AbstractIn this study the human petrous bone was investigated to find out whether and in what way it is adapted to mechanical stress by inner bone structure. Three normally formed petrous bones were cut in serial sections and examined by means of microradiography and circular polarized light with respect to mineralization, distribution of bone ...

Chemodectomas of the Petrous Bone
1987Chemodeetomas of the petrous bone are also known as glomus tumors or nonchromaffin paragangliomas. These lesions originate from microscopically small, nonchromaffin paraganglia (or “glomera”). Histologically, glomus structures are composed of capillary and precapillary blood vessels and epitheloid cells.

An Integrated Simulator for Surgery of the Petrous Bone
2001This paper describes work being undertaken as part of the IERAPSI (Integrated Environment for the Rehearsal and Panning of Surgical Intervention) project. The project is focussing on surgery for the petrous bone, and brings together a consortium of European clinicians and technology providers working in this field.

We have presented two cases of chordoma arising from an unusual location within the skull. Chordomas in the skull usually arise from within the body of the clivus, reputedly from notochordal remnants. The first case, which was diagnosed both with CT and MRI, had its origin from the petrous bone, with extension into the left cerebellopontine angle ...

Facial paralysis in fractures of the petrous bone
The Laryngoscope, 1974AbstractRecording of the summation potential of the facial muscles with surface electrodes from a representative population of motor units after maximal stimulation of the facial nerve trunk (electroneuronography) has been found essential for selecting patients requiring surgery because of facial paralysis associated with a fracture of the petrous bone.

Extradural Petrous Bone and Petroclival Neoplasms
1991Extradural petroclival tumours are composed of a spectrum of histological and anatomical configurations dictating a variety of surgical approaches. The experience with 68 such tumours operated at the University of Pittsburgh is presented, emphasizing the basal subfrontal and lateral approaches. 85% of these tumours are benign or low-grade malignancies,
