Modified phacoemulsification in situ
Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, 1998We describe a phacoemulsification technique for cataracts in eyes with anticipated weak zonular apparatus. After central sculpting, a crater 90% deep is made. A horizontal fracture is created with the phaco probe and chopper. The nucleus is chopped, dividing the inferior hemisection into 2 pie-shaped pieces, which are then emulsified.

The number one rule of phacoemulsification and aspiration cataract surgery is to know your machine. This chapter is designed to help the surgeon who is currently using phacoemulsification, or those who wish to understand more about technique, learn the basics and technology of the various types of phacoemulsification machines.

Phacoemulsification in a case of microspherophakia
Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, 2003Phacoemulsification with implantation of an acrylic foldable intraocular lens in a 14-year-old girl with microspherophakia is described. The associated lenticular myopia was disabling in terms of quality of life.

A technique designed to reduce zonular stress and ensure safe intercapsular phacoemulsification is described. This one-handed method is especially effective in eyes with strong adhesions between nucleus and cortical layers where hydrodissection is not possible.
