First report of fatal renal coccidiosis in a Biguá (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) in coinfection with nematodes from Argentina

open access: diamondSalud, Ciencia y Tecnología, 2022
After being rescued from a state of weakness, a biguá (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) specimen under clinical management conditions underwent a remarkable general improvement before abruptly deteriorating until dying within a few hours as a result of acute renal failure. Clinical analysis and post-mortem histopathological findings demonstrated the presence

Contracaecum rudolphii Hartwich (Nematoda, Anisakidae) from the Neotropical Cormorant, Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin) (Aves, Phalacrocoracidae) in southern Brazil [PDF]

open access: diamondRevista Brasileira De Zoologia, 2006
The present report is part of a larger study on the helminth fauna of Neotropical Cormorants, Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin, 1789) in Brazil, particularly, in the southernmost State of Rio Grande do Sul. The nematodes which were found loose in the proventriculus/ventriculus or in groups of adults of different ages and of L3 and L4 larval stages ...

Diet of the Neotropical Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) in a Patagonian Freshwater Environment Invaded by Exotic Fish [PDF]

open access: bronzeWaterbirds, 2012
Abstract. The diet of the Neotropical Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) was evaluated in the Limay River basin, a freshwater system invaded by exotic salmonids. Analyses of 106 pellets showed that fish were the most important prey (79.9% by numerical frequency and 86.2% by frequency of occurrence), followed by two crustacean species.

Redescription and molecular characterization of Baruscapillaria spiculata (Nematoda: Capillariidae) parasitizing the Neotropic cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus from two Argentinian lagoons [PDF]

open access: bronzeParasitology Research, 2021
Two species of intestinal Capillariidae were hitherto known from the Neotropic cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus, Baruscapillaria spiculata (Freitas, 1933), and Baruscapillaria appendiculata (Freitas, 1933). The original descriptions are very short and brief, and further reports of both species are scarce and/or confusing.

Flutuações sazonais na abundância de Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin) no estuário do Saco da Fazenda, Itajaí, Santa Catarina, Brasil [PDF]

open access: diamondRevista Brasileira De Zoologia, 2002
The Neotropic cormorant is one of the most comm on estuarine birds along SantaCatarina's shore, especially in artisanal fishery areas, where it obtains food easily. During the period from January, 1996 to December, 1999, and of January to December, 2001, the cormorants were monitored monthly in the estuary. The population P.

Genetic and Morphological Evidences for the Existence of a New Species of Contracaecum (Nematoda: Anisakidae) Parasite of Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin) From Chile and Its Genetic Relationships with Congeners From Fish-Eating Birds [PDF]

open access: bronzeJournal of Parasitology, 2011
Contracaecum australe n. sp. is described from the Neotropic cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus in Chile based on morphology and the sequence analyses of multiple loci, i.e., mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 2, mtDNA cox-2, the small subunit of the ...

open access: diamondRevista Brasileira De Zoologia, 2006
Os nematóides do gênero Syncuaria Gilbert, 1927 são parasitos de aves das ordens Pelecaniformes, Ciconiiformes e Podicipediformes. Onze espécies são consideradas válidas neste gênero, no entanto, somente duas, Syncuaria buckleyi (Ali, 1957) Wong, Anderson & Bartlett, 1986 e Syncuaria squamata (Linstow, 1883) Wong, Anderson & Bartlett, 1986 ...

A new species of Andracantha Schmidt (Acanthocephala, Polymorphidae) parasite of Neotropical cormorants, Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin) (Aves, Phalacrocoracidae) from southern Brazil [PDF]

open access: diamondRevista Brasileira De Zoologia, 2006
A new species of the genus Andracantha Schmidt, 1975, parasite of Neotropical cormorants, Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin, 1789), is described and compared to the other six species currently placed in the genus. The new species differs from the previously known species of Andracantha by having two inflations in the anterior region of the trunk and by

A new asymmetrical feather mite of the genus Michaelia trouessart, 1884 (Astigmata: Freyanidae) from the Neotropical Cormorant, Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Pelecaniformes)

open access: diamondAcarologia, 2016
Species of the feather mite genus Michaelia Trouessart, 1884 are notable for striking bilateral asymmetry in males, displayed in the structure of the anterior legs (both hetero- and homeomorphs) and the opisthosomal lobes (heteromorphs). A new species of this genus, Michaelia neotropica Hernandes and Mironov n.
