Electrical stimulation of referred sensation area alleviates phantom limb pain

Background: Patients with brachial plexus avulsion (BPA) usually experience phantom sensations and phantom limb pain (PLP) in the deafferented limb. It has been suggested that evoking the sensation of touch in the deafferented limb by stimulating referred sensation areas (RSAs) on the cheek or shoulder might alleviate PLP.

Differentiation and Treatment of Phantom Sensation, Phantom Pain, and Residual-Limb Pain

This article defines the three major forms of postamputation sensation: 1) phantom sensation, 2) phantom pain, and 3) residual-limb pain. Proposed etiologies for phantom pain are discussed. Phantom limb pain in the human brain: Unraveling neural circuitries of phantom limb sensations using positron emission tomography
