Semi-free forearm flap for pharyngeal-esophageal reconstruction after radiation therapy

open access: yesEuropean Annals of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Diseases, 2015
Reconstruction of the pharynx and upper esophagus uses various procedures, including pedicled or free flap. Pharyngoplasty with free forearm flap provides excellent functional results.

Pharyngeal flap outcomes for velopharyngeal insufficiency: Evaluation of speech, obstructive sleep apnea, and velopharyngeal anatomy

open access: yesJournal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the speech outcomes, reveal postoperative rates of obstructive sleep apnea, and characterize changes in the pharyngeal flap and velopharyngeal anatomy following pharyngeal flap surgery for velopharyngeal ...

The restrictive pharyngeal flap

British Journal of Plastic Surgery, 1970
Summary Five patients with hypernasal speech resulting from low lying restrictive pharyngeal flaps have been observed in this clinic. Two of these were improved by dividing the flaps and constructing a superiorly based flap in conjunction with the palatal pushback.

Augmentation of the Failed Pharyngeal Flap

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1992
Pharyngeal flaps are frequently used with good results to eliminate hypernasality and/or nasal escape. In a small percentage of patients, however, cicatricial contracture of the flap occurs to such a degree that velopharyngeal incompetence returns.

THE RE-DO PHARYNGEAL FLAP

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1976
Twelve patients with persistent hypernasal speech after a previous pharyngeal flap operation had a second pharyngeal flap operation performed by the high-attached technique. Six of them achieved complete or near complete correction of hypernasality in connected speech. Four showed speech improvement of a lesser degree.

Compound Pharyngeal Myocutaneous Flap

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1988
Rehabilitation of major palatal ablative defects associated with lateral composite resection of the tonsil, base of tongue, and/or hemimandible is a difficult problem. Palatal reconstruction is described with emphasis on the compound medially based posterior pharyngeal, pectoralis major myocutaneous flap, which we have found to be an effective and ...

The Posterior Pharyngeal Flap Palatoplasty

A.M.A. Archives of Otolaryngology, 1958
The posterior pharyngeal flap palatoplasty is by no means new. Trendelenburg first conceived the idea and obtained successful results in animal experimentation. Passavant 1 in 1865 was the first to raise a quadrilateral flap on the posterior pharyngeal wall, fold it on itself, and produce a pad. Later Garel 2 and Passavant advised the use of a palatal

The Arterial Basis of Pharyngeal Flaps

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1995
The arterial basis of pharyngeal flaps is unknown. Injection and dissection studies have been used in 41 adult human cadavers to study the arterial supply of pharyngoplasties in current use. Superiorly based posterior pharyngeal flaps are "random" in nature, inferiorly based posterior pharyngeal flaps may include an "axial" vessel, laterally based ...
