PHARYNGOCUTANEOUS FISTULA COMPLICATING TOTAL LARYNGECTOMY
Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery, 1980A series of 124 total laryngectomies for carcinoma is reviewed. The postoperative morbidity is discussed, and pharyngocutaneous fistula was found to occur in 30 patients. Its management is reviewed, and consideration is given to its relation to preoperative irradiation.

The method of closure of the pharynx during the ablation is of importance in preventing fistula formation. The original problem leading to large pharyngocutaneous fistula is the attempt at primary pharyngeal closure with insufficient pharyngeal mucosa.

Clinical Otolaryngology, 1979Postoperative pharyngocutaneous fistula formation is a troublesome complication in head and neck surgery and occurred in 8 out of 53 patients following a total laryngectomy (15%). The incidence falls within the lower range of that reported in the literature (6-66%). Different factors which may influence the formation of fistulae were analysed.
