Lectures on Phase Field [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
This open access textbook fills a gap, in that it introduces readers to the theory and applications of the Phase-Field technique. Phase Field, over the years, has emerged as a standard tool for materials research, just as the Finite-Element technique has in structure mechanics.

Phase-Field Crystals with Elastic Interactions [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2006
We report on a novel extension of the recent phase-field crystal (PFC) method introduced in [Elder et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., Vol. 88, 245701:1-4 (2002)], which incorporates elastic interactions as well as crystal plasticity and diffusive dynamics. In our model, elastic interactions are mediated through wave modes that propagate on time scales many ...

Phase-field approach for faceted solidification [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2003
We extend the phase-field approach to model the solidification of faceted materials. Our approach consists of using an approximate gamma-plot with rounded cusps that can approach arbitrarily closely the true gamma-plot with sharp cusps that correspond to faceted orientations.

Wicking in Porous Polymeric Membranes: Determination of an Effective Capillary Radius to Predict the Flow Behavior in Lateral Flow Assays

open access: yesMembranes, 2022
The working principle of lateral flow assays, such as the widely used COVID-19 rapid tests, is based on the capillary-driven liquid transport of a sample fluid to a test line using porous polymeric membranes as the conductive medium.

The deviation from eutectic composition in boundary layer for eutectic growth: a phase-field study [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials, 2019
In this paper, the deviation from eutectic composition in boundary layer for eutectic growth is studied by phase-field method. According to a series of artificial phase diagram, the lamellar eutectic growth of these alloy is simulated during directional ...

Phase Field Simulation of AA6XXX Aluminium Alloys Heat Treatment

open access: yesMetals, 2021
Heat treatment has a significant impact on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si alloys. The present study presents a first Phase-Field modelling approach on the recrystallisation and grain growth mechanism during annealing.

Composite fermion liquid to Wigner solid transition in the lowest Landau level of zinc oxide

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
In two-dimensional electron systems, strong Coulomb interactions lead to the formation of new phases. Here the authors observe a transition between two of these correlated phases, a composite fermion liquid and Wigner solid, in a zinc oxide ...

Phase-Field Models with Hysteresis

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, 2000
Phase-field systems as mathematical models for phase transitions have drawn increasing attention in recent years. However, while capable of capturing many of the experimentally observed phenomena, they are only of restricted value in modelling hysteresis effects occurring during phase transition processes. To overcome this shortcoming of existing phase-
