In this paper, the feasibility of using metal foams to enhance the heat transfer capability of phase change materials (PCMs) in low- and high-temperature thermal energy storage systems was assessed. Heat transfer in solid/liquid phase change of porous materials (metal foams and expanded graphite) at low and high temperatures was investigated.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the enhancement of energy storage rate of a thermal energy storage unit filled with a PCM by inserting a fin array system. Heat is transferred to the unit through its base plates, to which aluminum fins are attached. The PCM, a commercial paraffin wax, is stored between the fins.
