Phase-Modulated Photoacoustics [PDF]

open access: possible1983 Ultrasonics Symposium, 1983
A new technique is described to measure local periodic heating at and near a sample surface. The measurement involves the perturbation in phase of an externally-generated acoustic wave as it propagates through the heated region. The technique is capable of detecting temperature fluctuations over a large range of modulation frequencies with high ...

Conversion of amplitude modulation to phase modulation

International Journal of Electronics, 1977
The paper begins with a review of the work in the field of AM—PAI conversion by the injection synchronization technique. It presents a detailed theoretical investigation of the performance of such a system, and presents a now system of injection synchronization.

Phase-modulation scatterometry

Applied Optics, 2002
Phase-modulation scatterometry is a metrology technique for determining, by means of a phase modulator as a key device, the parameters of gratings. The main source of error to be dealt with are the fluctuations of the phase-modulation amplitude. The grating zeroth-order reflectance modulated by the phase modulator is converted into a signal by the ...

Phase grating modulator

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1999
A new type of optical modulator is reported in which a phase grating is used to diffract a beam of light. Piezoelectric elements modulate the phase shift between adjacent portions of the grating, and hence control the diffraction efficiency. Efficiencies of up to about 17% have been observed, compared to the theoretical maximum of about 40% for ...

Phase and modulation fluorometer

Journal of Scientific Instruments, 1961
The instrument, which is designed for the measurement of fluorescence decay times of 10-7-10-9 s, comprises a 10 Mc/s hydrogen discharge lamp, fast photomultiplier, variable delay line and detector circuit for phase and modulation analysis of light signals from the lamp and specimen.

Cross-Phase Modulation

1989
Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the coupling between two fields of different wavelengths, where a set of two coupled non-linear Schrodinger (NLS) equations is derived. It discusses how the cross-phase modulation (XPM) affects the phenomenon of modulation instability, using these equations. Two or more optical fields having different wavelengths

SELF-PHASE MODULATION

1989
Publisher Summary This chapter considers SPM as a simple example of the non-linear optical effects that can occur in optical fibers. It is devoted to pure SPM as it neglects the GVD effects and focuses on spectral changes induced by SPM. The combined effects of GVD and SPM are discussed with emphasis on the SPM-induced frequency chirp.

A New Phase Modulator

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1977
A phase modulator is described which deviates from perfect linearity by ± 1 degree maximum in the range± 90 degrees. It can be adjusted to eliminate third order distortion. A digital application is illustrated.

Phase-only modulation of light

Optics Letters, 2020
We disclose the method to obtain polarization insensitive phase-only modulation that preserves both the state and the degree of polarization of light modulated using a medium with controlled birefringence. We find that, in the double-pass configuration involving reflection from the Faraday rotator mirror, such a medium acts as the phase-only modulator.
