Automatic seismic phase picking and consistent observation error assessment: application to the Italian seismicity [PDF]
Accuracy of seismic phase observation and consistency of timing error assessment define the quality of seismic waves arrival times. High-quality and large data sets are prerequisites for seismic tomography to enhance the resolution of crustal and upper ...

Deep-learning-based phase picking in SeisComP using SeisBench
The open-source, seismological software package SeisComP is widely used for seismic monitoring world-wide. Its automatic phase picking module consists of an STA/LTA-based P-wave detector augmented by an AIC onset picker. With proper configuration, it allows detection and accurate onset picking for a wide range of seismic signals.

Pick the Winner Designs in Phase II Cancer Clinical Trials [PDF]
In this issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Masters et al.1 present the results of a randomized phase II trial evaluating two schedules of gemcitabine and carboplatin in patients with advanced non–small-cell lung cancer using a “selection design.” Assuming a hazard rate of 1.2 for progression-free survival, the authors state that a sample of 50 ...

Cell sorting in a Petri dish controlled by computer vision. [PDF]
Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) applying flow cytometry to separate cells on a molecular basis is a widespread method. We demonstrate that both fluorescent and unlabeled live cells in a Petri dish observed with a microscope can be ...

Seismic Phase Detection & Picking using EfficientNet
The monitoring of seismic waves for the detection of earthquakes and the picking of the arrival of P and S waves has been a challenging task in the field of observational seismology. While the use of deep learning techniques has led to improved performance, the models tend to suffer from poor generalizability and poor picking performance with the S ...

Earthquake Arrival Association with Backprojection and Graph Theory
The association of seismic wave arrivals with causative earthquakes becomes progressively more challenging as arrival detection methods become more sensitive, and particularly when earthquake rates are high.
