Phase Transitions

2012
Phase transitions are introduced using the van der Waals gas as an example. The equations of state are derived from the Helmholtz free energy of the ideal gas. The behavior of this model is analyzed, and an instability leads to a liquid-gas phase transition. The Maxwell construction for the pressure at which a phase transition occurs is derived.

The Transition Phase of Labor

The American Journal of Nursing, 1973
Transition-when the cervix dilates from about 7 cm. to 10 cm.-is generally considered the most difficult phase of labor and it is at this time that the couple who have learned a psychoprophylactic technique, such as the Lamaze method, face their most stringent test. Control can be precarious.

Phase Transitions

2023
Phase transitions denote transformations of the substance in one phase to another phase. The description of phase transitions is realized essentially within two schemes: a sharp interface across which the constitutive properties suffer a sudden change or a diffuse space region where the pertinent fields vary continuously. First, the jump conditions are

Nomenclature of phase transitions

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1958
Discusses the curious situation in which the terminology of chemistry and physics has only five words to describe the six possible transitions between three states of matter.

Phases, Phase Transitions

2016
In Sect. 3.7 we have derived the equilibrium conditions for thermodynamic systems. Those considerations can be further generalized. In the form of a gedanken-experiment, we divided the total system into two fictitious partial systems and therewith created a simple non-equilibrium situation.

Phase transitions in

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1998
Phase transitions in sintered ( were investigated by means of a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) in combination with magnetization measurement. Below 300 K, three phase transitions were identified: charge disorder-order, paramagnetism-antiferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism-canted spin structure transitions.

Overview of phases and phase transitions

Philosophical Magazine, 2015
We provide an overview of some modern developments in the theory of phases and phase transitions in classical and quantum systems. We show the link between non-ergodicity and fidelity in quantum systems and discuss topological phase transitions. We show that the quantum phase transitions are associated with qualitative changes in some properties of the

Phase transitions

2015
This article considers phase transitions in matrix models that are invariant under a symmetry group as well as those that occur in some matrix ensembles with preferred basis, like the Anderson transition. It first reviews the results for the simplest model with a nontrivial set of phases, the one-matrix Hermitian model with polynomial potential.
