Biotic and abiotic factors associated with genome size evolution in oaks

open access: yesEcology, Volume 105, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract The evolutionary processes that underlie variation in plant genome size have been much debated. Abiotic factors are thought to have played an important role, with negative and positive correlations between genome size and seasonal or stressful climatic conditions being reported in several systems.

Evaluating deterrents to reduce depredation of wood duck eggs in nest boxes

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 48, Issue 3, September 2024.
Rat snakes and woodpeckers were the main predators of wood duck eggs observed during our study. A commercially available snake repellent was not effective in deterring rat snakes entering nest boxes. Alternatively, a raptor decoy was effective in deterring woodpeckers and increased wood duck nest success when the decoy was present. Abstract Wood ducks (

Bias Correction in Logarithmic Regression and Comparison with Weighted Regression for Nonlinear Models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Non-linear models with heteroscedasticity are commonly used in ecological and forestry modeling, and logarithmic regression and weighted regression are usually employed to estimate the parameters. Using the single-tree biomass data of three large samples,

Leaf traits linked to structure and palatability drive plant–insect interactions within three forested ecosystems

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 111, Issue 1, January 2024.
Abstract Premise Plant traits and insect herbivory have been highly studied within the modern record but only to a limited extent within the paleontological. Preservation influences what can be measured within the fossil record, but modern methods are also not compatible with paleobotanical methods.
