Phenylephrine hydrochloride eyedrops induce vasoconstriction through alpha-adrenergic mechanisms. Ten subjects underwent a 46% reduction in conjunctival PO2 when 2.5% phenylephrine eyedrops were administered. Compared with a control group, this reduction was significant. The Spectrophotometric Determination of Tetracaine and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride

A method is presented for the quantitative determination of tetracaine and phenylephrine hydrochloride in therapeutic preparations based on ultraviolet spectrophotometry and colorimetry. Tetracaine absorbs light strongly in the spectral region of 310 mμ, while phenylephrine shows negligible absorption at this wave length.
