Peripheral, central and behavioral responses to the cuticular pheromone bouquet in Drosophila melanogaster males. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Pheromonal communication is crucial with regard to mate choice in many animals including insects. Drosophila melanogaster flies produce a pheromonal bouquet with many cuticular hydrocarbons some of which diverge between the sexes and differently affect ...

Sexual Communication in the Drosophila Genus

open access: yesInsects, 2014
In insects, sexual behavior depends on chemical and non-chemical cues that might play an important role in sexual isolation. In this review, we present current knowledge about sexual behavior in the Drosophila genus.

Alarm Pheromone in a Gregarious Poduromorph Collembolan (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We report an alarm pheromone in the gregarious poduromorph collembolan, Hypogastrura pannosa. Cuticular rupture results in emission of a rapidly vaporizing hexane-soluble material with an active space diameter of ca. 1 cm.

Microbial Odorant Detection Guides Drosophila Parasitoids Seeking Hosts in Fermenting Fruits

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Yeast microbes in fermenting fruits attract both host flies and their parasitoid wasps. Female Leptopilina boulardi detect yeast‐emitted ethyl esters via two olfactory receptors, LbouOR167 and LbouOR136. A conserved residue, Leu159, is critical for binding these compounds, enabling female wasps to locate host‐rich habitats.

The reactivity of neonatal rabbits to the mammary pheromone as a probe for viability

open access: yesAnimal, 2007
Newborn rabbits depend on a daily nursing interaction with the mother to gain milk and to survive. During this interaction, they localise and seize the nipples displaying a typical behaviour triggered by maternal odour cues.

Thermal signatures of human pheromones in sexual and reproductive behaviour [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Chemically mediated sexual communication in humans has been largely neglected due to its non-conscious and relatively concealed nature. However, menstrual cycle synchronisation, puberty onset in young pre-pubertal girls exposed to their stepfather, and ...

Evolution of Physical Intelligence Across Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
By following the evolution of physical intelligence across scales, this article shows how intelligence arises from materials, structures, physical interactions, and collectives. It establishes physical intelligence as the evolutionary foundation upon which embodied intelligence is built.

Are Hand Preference and Sexual Orientation Possible Predicting Factors for Finasteride Adverse Effects in Male Androgenic Alopecia? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Sexual side effects of finasteride seem to be redoubtable, being encountered not only during therapy but also after treatment cessation. Consequently, any possible clinical/paraclinical elements that might predict these adverse effects would be useful in

MusicSwarm: Biologically Inspired Intelligence for Music Composition

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Biologically inspired swarms of frozen foundation models self‐organize to compose complex music without fine‐tuning. By coordinating through stigmergic signals, decentralized agents dynamically evolve specialized roles and adapt to solve complex tasks.

Defensive repertoire of the stingless bee Melipona flavolineata Friese (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

open access: yesSociobiology, 2014
Despite the fact that Meliponini bee lost their sting apparatus (stingless bees), they did not lose their ability to defend themselves. A variety of defensive strategies is described for the group, such as bitting and resin deposition.
