Unravelling Evolutionary Dynamics of Female Sexual Cannibalism and Male Reproductive Strategies in Spiders

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Sexual cannibalism (SC), where one mating partner consumes the other in the context of mating, is especially prevalent among spiders. However, the evolution of SC in spiders is still not fully understood. We review key hypotheses for SC and explore how female‐initiated SC has driven the evolution of various male counter‐adaptations to mitigate its ...

Sensory Biology of the Franciscana (Pontoporia blainville, Pontoporiidae, Cetartiodactyla): Ontogenetic Modifications of Vibrissae and Vibrissal Crypts

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
The transition of cetaceans from a terrestrial to an aquatic environment involved a crucial sensory adaptation to environments with limited visibility. Vibrissae, important mechanoreceptors, undergo an ontogenetic transformation in odontocetes. This research describes the histomorphology of vibrissae and crypts at different developmental stages ...

Aggregation mediated by faeces and footprints in Triatoma pseudomaculata (Heteroptera: Reduviidae), a Chagas disease vector

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2002
The behavioural response of Triatoma pseudomaculata to chemical substances present in their faeces or cuticle (footprints) was analyzed. Groups of larvae were simultaneously exposed to a clean filter paper and to another paper impregnated with a chemical

A New Experimental Setup to Study the Olfactory Behaviour of Trichogramma Egg Parasitoids

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We developed an experimental setup to assess odor‐induced egg‐laying behavior in tiny egg‐parasitoid wasps. This Y‐shaped olfactometer, coupled with an AI‐based image‐recognition model, automatically quantifies egg parasitism by Trichogramma wasps. Olfactory‐driven egg‐laying preferences were analyzed using Bayesian inference.

Development of Pheromone-Receptor-Based Biosensors for the Early Detection of Pest Insects

open access: yesProceedings
Insects destroy approximately one third of the world’s annual crop production. Their early detection enables the implementation of appropriate measures to prevent excessive infestation. Insects use species-specific chemical signals known as pheromones to

Orchard Management Influences Predation of Halyomorpha halys Eggs

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We investigated predation of eggs of the invasive stink bug Halyomorpha halys on apple trees in conventional, organic, and extensively managed Dutch orchards. Predation exceeded 40% in extensively managed orchards but was only about 10% in conventional and organic ones. We used camera traps to reveal natural enemies that may contribute to H.
