Abstract No other sixteenth-century interpreter of Scripture had a more wide-ranging influence than Philip Melanchthon (1497–1560). His books on Greek grammar, on rhetoric, and on dialectics set the stage for scholarly discussion of texts. His commentaries demonstrated how this method might be employed.
