Renaissance StudiesAbstract The speech Philip Melanchthon gave on 29 August 1518 at the University of Wittenberg to initiate his professorship is an impressive piece of humanist idealism. Already its title, De corrigendis adolescentiae studiis (On the reform of the studies for the young) reveals his earnest ambitions in introducing reform.

While a student at the Universities of Heidelberg and Tübingen, Philip Melanchthon (b. 1497–d. 1560) had won recognition for his abilities as a promulgator of the reforms of the biblical humanistic movement. That reputation propelled him into a professorship at the infant University of Wittenberg in 1518.

Abstract Luther’s companion lectures on the Nicomachean Ethics from the early 1530s to 1560. In this work, Aristotle’s iustitia remains the focus of his attention. While Melanchthon’s early writings follow Luther, a certain reorientation becomes visible in the Apology of the Augsburg Confession.
