Legacy and the Politics of Racial Terminology

open access: yesJournal of Applied Philosophy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT When a term carries a sordid past, it is tempting to think it should have no future use. Yet the normative life of a word is rarely exhausted by its origins. Elevated Hemoglobin A2: A Molecular Revisited, and Implications to β‐Thalassemia Screening

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, EarlyView.
In Thailand, the Hb A2 cut‐off value for β‐thalassemia carrier has been changed from 4.0% to 3.6% since 2015. We examined the molecular basis of β‐thalassemia in a large cohort of Thai subjects with this change. The molecular basis of β‐thalassemia was updated, and a change in the Hb A2 cut‐off can alter this spectrum.

Observed Linkages Between Marine Heatwaves and Extreme Weather Over Land: A New Zealand Case Study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Marine heatwaves consistently warm New Zealand's land surface, but rainfall impacts occur only when synoptic systems enable moisture transport. This 38‐year analysis shows MHWs act as thermodynamic background drivers of heat and conditional amplifiers of extreme rainfall events or droughts.
