The genera and species of the Brueelia-complex (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) described by Mey (2017)

Two large taxonomic revisions of chewing lice belonging to the Brueelia-complex were published independently in 2017: Gustafsson & Bush (August 2017) and Mey (September 2017). However, Mey (2017) was incorrectly dated “Dezember 2016” on the title page.

Philopteridae feather lice are a group of ectoparasitic insects which have intimate relationships with their avian hosts. Feather lice include an enormous number of described species; however, the relationships of major lineages have been clouded by homoplasious characters due to convergent evolution.

Anaticola crassicornis (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera: Philopteridae) on wild geese from Pakistan

Twenty-eight geese (Anser anser, A. albifrons and A. indicus) from different localities around Karachi, Pakistan, were examined for lice. One species of chewing louse, Anaticola crassicornis (Scopoli), was found on every bird examined. This is the first record of this louse species from members of Anser.

Confirmation of the identity of the type host of the louse Halipeurus fallacis (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae)

Alexander (1954: 489) recorded a petrel (Aves: Procellariiformes) captured alive on board a ship in the Indian Ocean by Mr W.W.A. Phillips who, after removing some lice, liberated it the following morning. Alexander (1954) identified that petrel as the species “Pterodroma aterrima Bonaparte”, now placed in the genus Pseudobulweria.

SYNOPSISThe characters of the macrogenitalis group of Strigiphilus are reviewed. A key is given to the six species now included, three of which are described as new from the owls, Ciccaba woodfordi, Scotopelia peli and Bubo poensis. Notes on the three previously known species are included.
