[Neurosciences and philosophy of mind].
Vertex (Buenos Aires, Argentina), 2005In this paper we argue that the interaction between neurosciences and philosophy of the mind is on the way to understand consciousness, and to solve the mind-body or mind-brain problem. Naturalism is the view that mental processes are just brain processes and that consciousness is a natural phenomenon.

Better Bridges: Integrating the Neuroscience and Philosophy of Consciousness
Consciousness and CognitionContemporary consciousness research has given rise to numerous theories in both the philosophical and neuroscientific domains (such as higher-order theory and global neuronal workspace), raising the question as to how well each is supported. This article develops a relatively novel method for determining this, which is to use evidence, not just from a ...

The concept of free will: philosophy, neuroscience and the law
Behavioral Sciences & the Law, 2007AbstractVarious philosophical definitions of free will are first considered. The compatibilist definition, which says simply that acts are freely willed if they are not subject to constraints, is identified as much used in the legal system and essentially impervious to scientific investigation.

Philosophy of Mind and Neuroscience: Evidence, Hypotheses, Critique
2020In this chapter I analyze selected aspects of the contemporary investigations on consciousness and the brain. First, I introduce kinds of materialism and functionalism formulated in philosophy of mind since the 1950s, pointing out the gap between theories and their future empirical corroboration. Second, I provide a survey of the problem of qualitative

The Impact of Social Neuroscience on Moral Philosophy
2018Part I begins with Patricia Churchland exploring the impact of social neuroscience on moral philosophy. She argues that the basic platform for morality is attachment and bonding, and the caring behavior motivated by such attachment—and that oxytocin, a neurohormone, is at the hub of attachment behavior in social mammals and probably birds.

Precis of Philosophy and Neuroscience: A Ruthlessly Reductive Account
Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences, 2005This book precis describes the motives behind my recent attempt to bring to bear “ruthlessly reductive” results from cellular and molecular neuroscience onto issues in the philosophy of mind. Since readers of this journal will probably be most interested in results addressing features of conscious experience, I highlight these most prominently. My main
