Be Aware of the Risk of Phlebotominae

Actually, L. infantum is the one most often associated with visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and it is transmitted through infected phlebotomine sandflies bites. VL should be suspected in children with prolonged fever of unknown origin, hepatosplenomegaly and/or pancytopenia.

The classification of American Phlebotominae is particularly difficult as many species are known in one sex only, because of the large number of species and their great morphological variation, without, however, the formation of clearly defined groups. On The Phlebotominae of Iran

Observations on the taxonomy, habitats and distribution of the 34 phlebotomine sandflies of Iran are recorded. Twenty species belong to Phlebotomus and 14 to Sergentomyia . A new subgenus of Sergentomyia , 2 new species and a new subspecies in Phlebotomus and a new subspecies of Sergentomyia dreyfussi are described.

The Sand-Files of the Gambia (Diptera: Phlebotominae)

Thirteen species of Phlebotominae were found in the Gambia, one of Phlebotomus and 12 of Sergentomyia . Most are typical of Savanna but two species from the coast are known from wetter areas elsewhere in West Africa. Notes are given on prevalence in relation to vegetation, resting sites and season.
