Epiphyte‐host relationships of remnant and recombinant urban ecosystems in Hamilton, New Zealand: the importance of Dicksonia squarrosa (G.Forst.) Sw., whekī

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Botany, Volume 63, Issue 1, Page 150-159, March 2025.
ABSTRACT More than a thousand iNaturalist NZ observations were compiled and analysed to determine common vascular epiphyte‐host relationships in Hamilton, North Island, New Zealand. Dicksonia squarrosa supported the most epiphytes, followed by Salix cinerea, Melicytus ramiflorus and Cyathea medullaris.

Comparison of 454-ESTs from Huperzia serrata and Phlegmariurus carinatus reveals putative genes involved in lycopodium alkaloid biosynthesis and developmental regulation

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2010
Background Plants of the Huperziaceae family, which comprise the two genera Huperzia and Phlegmariurus, produce various types of lycopodium alkaloids that are used to treat a number of human ailments, such as contusions, swellings and strains.

Molecular Insights into Pteridophytes Biosystematics: Article review [PDF]

open access: yes
Plant classification is not only studied with morphological evidence but is associated with studies using molecular phylogeny approaches. Molecular phylogenetic studies can also be used to analyze plant biogeography. Materials and methods: Information on

A linear sequence of extant families and genera of lycophytes and ferns [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Throughout the history of the classification of extant ferns (monilophytes) and lycophytes, familial and generic concepts have been in great flux. For the organisation of lycophytes and ferns in herbaria, books, checklists, indices and spore banks and on

The impact of invasive alien species on threatened and endangered species: A geographic perspective

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 48, Issue 4, December 2024.
To help guide recovery efforts, we document how invasive alien species (IAS) impact threatened and endangered species (T&ES) under the Endangered Species Act. Our research shows that 58% of T&ES (n = 1,545) were impacted by IAS, with Pacific Island species (97%) facing greater threats from IAS compared to Mainland (38%) and Atlantic Island species (22%)

Insights into U‐to‐C RNA editing from the lycophyte Phylloglossum drummondii

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 119, Issue 1, Page 445-459, July 2024.
Significance Statement U‐to‐C RNA editing is only found in plants, and within plants, only in some hornworts, lycophytes and ferns. The unusual lycophyte Phylloglossum drummondii contains four U‐to‐C editing sites that can be matched with four putative U‐to‐C editing enzymes, making it a useful model for the study of this uncommon process.

Diversity, taxonomy, and history of the tropical fern genus Didymoglossum Desv. (Hymenophyllaceae, Polypodiidae) in Africa

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 84-101, January 2024.
Analyses combining morphology and molecules confirmed the presence in tropical Africa of at least seven species of Didymoglossum ferns (Hymenophyllaceae) and traced the history of the genus in Africa, which would imply numerous multiple dispersals from the Neotropics or the western Indian Ocean and at least one local diversification in the Cenozoic.

Three millennia of vegetation and environmental dynamics in the Lagunas de Mojanda region, northern Ecuador

open access: yesActa Palaeobotanica, 2017
The pollen record from Lagunas de Mojanda, located at 3748 m a.s.l. (northern Ecuadorian Andes) reflects the vegetation and climate dynamics for the last ca 3400 cal yr BP.
