Abstract 40 Ar/ 39 Ar analyses have been made on phlogopite-bearing peridotite nodules from Bultfontein and phlogopite nodules from Du Toitspan, Kimberley area, South Africa. Neither definite plateau nor isochron age could be obtained due to the occurrence of an excess 40 Ar in phlogopite.

Al-saturated phlogopite: Charge considerations and crystal chemistry
Clays and Clay Minerals, 2009Abstract Factors controlling the crystal structure of phlogopite have been widely investigated; but the role of electrostatic interactions, for example, has received much less attention than other factors. The purpose of the present study was to peform a single-crystal refinement of an Al-saturated phlogopite and ...

Rare gases in a phlogopite nodule and a phlogopite-bearing peridotite in South African kimberlites
Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 1977Rare gas isotopes in a phlogopite nodule and a phlogopite-bearing peridotite nodule in South African kimberlites were studied to examine the state of rare gases in the deep interior of the kimberlite region. Within the experimental error of 1 ∼ 2%, rare gas isotopic compositions are atmospheric except for radiogenic4He and40Ar.

Mantle xenoliths containing phlogopite and phlogopite–amphibole mineralization from kimberlites of the Kuoika field have been studied. Such xenoliths were found in two series of rocks: magnesian (Mg) pyroxenite–peridotite and Fe-type phlogopite–ilmenite hyperbasite.

Sector-zoned phlogopites in igneous rocks
Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, 1987Sector-zoned micas are described in three occurrences of igneous rocks. Basal sectors (001) and lateral sectors (010) are well defined. Analyses of probably isochronous growth points indicate that there are consistent chemical composition differences between the sectors, the (010) sector being richer in Si and poorer in Ti, Fe, Al and Ba relative to ...

Argon isotopic zoning in mantle phlogopite
Geology, 1988Incremental-heating and laser-probe /sup 40/Ar//sup 39/Ar analyses were performed on phlogopite extracted from a garnet-lherzolite mantle nodule entrained by the Precambrian (1200 Ma) Premier kimberlite, South Africa. The spatial resolution of the laser probe has enabled the characterization of argon isotopic zoning in a single phlogopite grain.

X.—Optical Peculiarities in Phlogopite
Geological Magazine, 1909It frequently happens that micas exhibit small basal cleavage rifts of roughly circular shape, and these may be so numerous as to render opaque or feebly translucent a plate which would be otherwise quite transparent. The so-called silver-amber mica of the mica trade, a variety of phlogopite which is highly prized for its low conductivity, apparently ...

Highly filled polyethylene/phlogopite composites
Materials Letters, 2002Mica is used as reinforcing filler in the polymer industry mainly because of the two-dimensional isotropic nature of reinforcement. Phlogopite and muscovite are under the more common micas with phlogopite found in abundance in South Africa. Phlogopite/linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) composites containing 20% and less LLDPE were manufactured to ...

The evaporation of potassium from phlogopite
Journal of Thermal Analysis, 1989The evaporation of potassium from phlogopite was investigated by roasting phlogopite with different chemical reagents. The possible reactions between reactants and the sample at different temperatures were investigated by thermogravimetry. Gypsum, calcite, sodium chloride, activated carbon, calcium chloride and fluoride were used as chemical reactants.

Abstract High-pressure experiments have been made on the stability of natural and synthetic phlogopites by the tetrahedral-anvil type high-pressure apparatus in the pressure range from 41 to 96 kb (kilobars) and in the temperature range from 1030° to 1680°C. Water pressure is probably equal to or slightly lower than total pressure during the runs. It
