Growth in Northwest Atlantic Harp seals Phoca groenlandica
Journal of Zoology, 1981Morphometric data were collected from 204 Northwest Atlantic Harp seals aged one month and older sampled between 1976 and 1979. Length as a function of age gave the most precise measure of body size. Lean body (core) weight and total body weight were more variable measures of growth.

Dental ontogeny of harp seals, Phoca groenlandica
Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1987Harp seal fetuses and neonates were examined to determine the development, resorption, and eruption characteristics of deciduous and permanent dentition. Early September fetuses had recently formed, deciduous teeth only. By early December the deciduous dentition was robust and enameled. Permanent teeth were also present.

Science of The Total Environment, 1984Between 1976 and 1978, 249 harp seals were sampled from five locations in the Northwest Atlantic and Arctic for heavy metal and selenium residue analyses in tissue. Significant loading was apparent only in blood, brain, kidney, liver and muscle. Samples were analysed for mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb).

Purification and characterization of myoglobin from harp seal (Phoca groenlandica)
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1992The purification and characterization of seal meat myoglobin after aqueous extraction of hemoproteins from muscle tissues was investigated. Of the 59 mg/g total hemoproteinsin seal meat, only 27% of its myoglobin content was recovered by the commonly used buffer precipitation method.
