Age determination methods in harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) with a review of methods applicable to carnivores

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2010
The development of age determination methods in marine mammals is reviewed with particular reference to the use of teeth Growth Layer Groups (GLGs) formed in the dentine and cement of carnivores.

High and minimally variable adult marine survival among multiple stocks of Chinook salmon

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Estimates of individual survival across space and time provide critical information on processes that regulate population abundance. Here, we use state‐space models fit to data from more than 500 acoustically tagged Chinook salmon to better understand the factors that shape survival during the final summer and fall of marine residence—a life ...

Management coverage and spatial gaps for carnivore habitat across Mexico

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 9, September 2026.
We evaluated the spatial overlap between four land management types and the habitat of 28 terrestrial carnivores in Mexico. Our findings reveal that non‐designated land management types like Indigenous Territories may provide significant habitat coverage, and that significant coverage gaps for carnivores remain.

Dolphin Morbillivirus Infection in a Captive Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina). [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
During the second morbillivirus epidemic (2007 to 2011) in cetaceans along the Italian coastline, dolphin morbillivirus (DMV)was detected by molecular analyses in a captive harbor seal (Phoca vitulina), with pathological findings consistent with ...

Outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Virus in Seals, St. Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, Canada

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases
We describe an unusual mortality event caused by a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus clade 2.3.4.4b involving harbor (Phoca vitulina) and gray (Halichoerus grypus) seals in the St. Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, Canada, in 2022. Fifteen (

Avian influenza overview June–August 2026

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Between 5 June and 28 August 2026, 110 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus detections were reported in domestic (7) and wild (103) birds in 12 countries in Europe. The number of detections remained at a seasonal low throughout the summer, continuing the decline observed since spring.

Recoveries of Common Seals Phoca vitulina L. tagged along the Norwegian coast

open access: yesFauna Norvegica, 1988
A total of 296 Common Seals have been tagged along the Norwegian coast in the period from 1978 to 1987. Thirty six of the tagged seals have been recovered. Twenty six during their first year of life.

Not Quite Folded: Challenges in Predicting the hNPS‐hNPSR‐Ile107 Complex With AlphaFold2 Multimer

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 16, 27 August 2026.
AlphaFold2 Multimer guided the design of 20 novel human neuropeptide S (hNPS) cyclic analogues. Modelling bias toward the inactive state favoured receptor blockade over activation. Exploiting a stereochemical switch in the peptide hinge region yielded four potent NPS receptor (NPSR) antagonists with pA2 up to 6.20. Lines indicate conformational bridges
