A methodological study of hemilaryngeal phonation

AbstractAn excised hemilarynx setup was developed. The phonatory characteristics of nine excised canine larynges were examined. The left vocal fold of each larynx was then removed and substituted with a vertical plexiglass plate. The larynges were phonated again.

Nonmodal phonation, however, commonly occurs not only for disordered voice but also for normal voices, which often exhibit a breathy quality or irregular vibration.

The sounds of speech are produced by the exhaled air from the lungs associated with changes of the true vocal cords to produce phonation. Further, exhaled air undergoes modifications in the “vocal tract”—the spaces and passages above the larynx—so that noises such as bursts and hisses produce the voiceless aspects of speech.

Dependence of phonation threshold pressure and phonation onset frequency on vocal fold geometry was numerically investigated in a continuum model of the vocal folds. The geometric parameters of interest include the medial surface thickness, vocal fold depths of the body, and cover layers.
