Abstract This chapter examines phonological variation in the Malayo-Polynesian languages of Southeast Asia in terms of a number of phonological traits relevant to the area: nasal substitution, and templaticity of root structure (in terms of syllable shape, number of syllables, and adjustments to root shapes).
