Synthesis and Photochromism of Novel Phenylene-Linked Photochromic Bispyrans
Organic Letters, 2005[reaction: see text] Phenylene-linked bisnaphthopyrans were synthesized in good yields via the one-pot reaction of bis-propargyl alcohols with naphthols. Temperature-dependent photochromism in 1,4-phenylene-linked bispyrans leads to up to 60 nm bathochromic shift between the colored species formed at room temperature and at -20 degrees C.

Photochromic glasses: Properties and applications
Journal of Materials Science, 1967Photochromic materials are those which react reversibly to light. Photochromism is therefore distinguished from the familiar photographic processes, which, because of the chemical development of the image, are essentially irreversible. Many organic materials, and a few inorganic ones, show this phenomenon.

In contrast to light-emitting displays like plasma display panels (PDPs) and liquid crystal displays (LCDs), color-forming displays like "E-Ink" which displays information by reflecting surrounding light are being actively researched as a technology that is easy on the eye and can even be applied in bright places such as outdoors in sunlight.
