Three dimensional visualization by photon counting computational Integral Imaging

open access: yesOptics Express, 2008
In this paper, we present three dimensional (3D) object reconstruction using photon-counted elemental images acquired by a passive 3D Integral Imaging (II) system. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimator is derived to reconstruct the irradiance of the 3D scene pixels and the reliability of the estimator is described by confidence intervals.

Distance Extraction by Means of Photon-Counting Passive Sensing Combined with Integral Imaging [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Optical Society of Korea, 2011
Photon-counting sensing is a widely used technique for low-light-level imaging applications. This paper proposes a distance information extraction method with photon-counting passive sensing under low-lightlevel conditions. The photo-counting passive sensing combined with integral imaging generates a photon-limited elemental image array.

Photon Counting Integral Imaging Using Compound Photon Counting Model and Adaptive Parametric Maximum Likelihood Estimator

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2017
In this paper, a statistical approach based on an adaptive parametric estimator is proposed for the three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of objects under photon-starved conditions. In photon counting integral imaging system, 3-D objects having small number of photons can be visualized by the prior-based statistical estimation. However, improper prior

Extraction of Distance Information with Nonlinear Correlation of Photon-Counting Integral Imaging

open access: yesJournal of the Optical Society of Korea, 2016
Integral imaging combined with photon-counting detection has been researched for three-dimensional information sensing under low-light-level conditions. This paper addresses the extraction of distance information with photon-counting integral imaging. The longitudinal distance to the object is obtained utilizing photon-counting elemental images.

Three-Dimensional Visualization of Long Range Scenes by Photon Counting Mid-Wave Infrared Integral Imaging [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Display Technology, 2015
Integral imaging under photon counting conditions has found different three-dimensional (3D) imaging applications, including 3D image reconstruction and recognition. In this paper, we present the application of the maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation method for visualization of 3D scenes in photon starved environments using mid-wave infrared 3D data of ...

Three-dimensional photon counting integral imaging reconstruction using penalized maximum likelihood expectation maximization

open access: yesOptics Express, 2011
Recent works have demonstrated that three-dimensional (3D) object reconstruction is possible from integral images captured in severely photon starved conditions. In this paper we propose an iterative approach to implement a maximum likelihood expectation maximization estimator with several types of regularization for 3D reconstruction from photon ...

Role of spatial correlation in photon-counting integral imaging

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2010
The method of photon-counting integral imaging (PCII) has been introduced recently for three-dimensional object sensing, visualization, recognition and classification of scenes under photon-starved conditions. This paper presents an information-theoretic model for the PCII method, thereby providing a rigorous foundation for our understanding of its ...

Photon Counting Linear Discriminant Analysis with Integral Imaging for Occluded Target Recognition [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Optical Society of Korea, 2008
This paper discusses a photon-counting linear discriminant analysis (LDA) with computational integral imaging (II). The computational II method reconstructs three-dimensional (3D) objects on the reconstruction planes located at arbitrary depth-levels. A maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) can be used to estimate the Poisson parameters of photon counts ...

Three-Dimensional Photon Counting Integral Imaging Reconstruction using Merging Reconstruction Method

open access: yes2020 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Information and Communication (ICAIIC), 2020
In this paper, we propose a new three-dimensional (3D) photon counting integral imaging reconstruction method using elemental image merging process for the effective use of the extracted photons under severely photon starved conditions. In previous methods, the photons are extracted from elemental images using Poisson random process and 3D images are ...

Integral imaging acquisition and processing for visualization of photon counting images in the mid-wave infrared range [PDF]

open access: yesSPIE Proceedings, 2016
In this paper, we present an overview of our previously published work on the application of the maximum likelihood (ML) reconstruction method to integral images acquired with a mid-wave infrared detector on two different types of scenes: one of them consisting of a road, a group of trees and a vehicle just behind one of the trees (being the car at a ...
