Two-mode photonic crystal fibers

open access: yesSPIE Proceedings, 2005
Index-guiding photonic crystal fibers with appropriate structural parameters support the fundamental and second order modes over a practically infinite wavelength range. The polarization principal axes and mode field patterns of the modes can be made stable by having different size air-holes along the orthogonal directions.

Light‐Actuated Fiber‐Climbing Inchworm Robot Toward Endoluminal Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A kirigami‐inspired soft inchworm robot harnesses optical energy from a customized side‐emitting optical fiber, guaranteeing its propulsion along the fiber body. The wavelength‐selective responsiveness of dye‐functionalized liquid crystal elastomers and the application of temporal illumination patterns enable sequential control of robot components. The

Spontaneous emission in the near-field of 2D photonic crystals

open access: yes, 2005
We show theoretically that photonic crystal membranes cause large variations in the spontaneous emission rate of dipole emitters, not only inside but also in the near-field above the membranes.

Opportunities of Semiconducting Oxide Nanostructures as Advanced Luminescent Materials in Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The review discusses the challenges of wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconducting oxides as a suitable material platform for photonics. They offer great versatility in terms of tuning microstructure, native defects, doping, anisotropy, and micro‐ and nano‐structuring. The review focuses on their light emission, light‐confinement in optical cavities, and

Self‐Assembled Inorganic Nanomembrane Tubes: Rolled‐Up Piezoelectrics for Microacoustic Wave‐Based Actuators and Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a self‐assembly process to generate free‐standing piezoelectric nanomembranes, forming ultracompact microtubular acoustic wave sensors and actuators. The miniaturized 3D piezoelectric platform reported in this work can be applied in telecommunication, energy harvesting, and acoustofluidics. Moreover, the 3D self‐assembly can add

Ultra-large bandwidth hollow-core guiding in all-silica Bragg fibers with nano-supports [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We demonstrate a new class of hollow-core Bragg fibers that are composed of concentric cylindrical silica rings separated by nanoscale support bridges. We theoretically predict and experimentally observe hollow-core confinement over an octave frequency ...

One‐Dimensional Materials Supported in Two‐Dimensional Van der Waals Metal–Organic Frameworks with Optical Anisotropy Switching via Twist‐Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We introduce a molecular strategy to assemble one‐dimensional (1D) materials into two‐dimensional (2D) van der Waals metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Crystals of [FeX(pzX)(bpy)] (X = Cl, F) form anisotropic 2D layers that can be mechanically exfoliated into thin sheets.

Freeform Manufacturing of Plant‐Based Structural Colors for Scalable Photonic and Mechanochromic Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A green, freeform manufacturing approach that utilizes robust aqueous two‐phase systems to create intricate and scalable photonic structures and non‐planar mechanochromic hydrogel actuators from plant‐based hydroxypropyl cellulose. This approach broadens the structural possibilities of sustainable photonic devices and mechanochromic systems, offering ...
