Mechanically Tunable Negative-Index Photonic Crystal Lens

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2010
We report the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-enabled mechanically tunable negative-index photonic crystal lens, which was comprised of 2-D photonic crystal and symmetrical electro-thermal actuators. The 2-D photonic crystal was made of a honeycomb

Study of laser actions by bird’s feathers with photonic crystals

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Random lasers had been made by some biomaterials as light scattering materials, but natural photonic crystals have been rarely reported as scattering materials.

Design of Chemically Recyclable Nanocellulose Chiral Liquid Crystal Photonic Elastomer Vitrimer and its Mechanosensitive Colour-changing Materials

open access: yesBioResources, 2023
The development of nanocellulose (CNCs) chiral liquid crystal photonic elastomeric vitrimer materials is promising for achieving needed reduction in carbon emissions (elastomer material recycling) and developing novel photonic functional materials.

Multiple and colorful cone-shaped lasing induced by band-coupling in a 1D dual-periodic photonic crystal

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2013
We demonstrate multiple and colorful cone-shaped lasing from dual-periodic photonic crystal, indicating that coupling occurs between the photonic bands in a photonic crystal laser system.

Extremal transmission through a microwave photonic crystal and the observation of edge states in a rectangular Dirac billiard

open access: yes, 2011
This article presents experimental results on properties of waves propagating in an unbounded and a bounded photonic crystal consisting of metallic cylinders which are arranged in a triangular lattice. First, we present transmission measurements of plane

Spatiotemporal Photonic Crystals

open access: yesConference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, 2020
We study photonic systems periodic in both time and space - spatiotemporal photonic crystals, and find that their bandstructure contains both frequency and momentum bandgaps. When the two types of bandgaps coincide, anomalous bandstructure is observed.

Photon confinement in photonic crystal nanocavities [PDF]

open access: yesLaser & Photonics Reviews, 2008
AbstractThe quest for enhanced light‐matter interactions has enabled a tremendous increase in the performance of photonic‐crystal nanoresonators in the past decade. State‐of‐the‐art nanocavities now offer mode lifetime in the nanosecond range with confinement volumes of a few hundredths of a cubic micrometer.

General Recipe for Designing Photonic Crystal Cavities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We describe a general recipe for designing high-quality factor (Q) photonic crystal cavities with small mode volumes. We first derive a simple expression for out-of-plane losses in terms of the k-space distribution of the cavity mode.

Conductance of photons in disordered photonic crystals [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2005
The conductance of photons in two-dimensional disordered photonic crystals is calculated using an exact multipole-plane wave method that includes all multiple scattering processes. Conductance fluctuations, the universal nature of which has been established for electrons in the diffusive regime, are studied for photons, in both principal polarizations ...

Quadrupole topological photonic crystals [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
AbstractQuadrupole topological phases, exhibiting protected boundary states that are themselves topological insulators of lower dimensions, have recently been of great interest. Extensions of these ideas from current tight binding models to continuum theories for realistic materials require the identification of quantized invariants describing the bulk
