PHOTONIC CRYSTAL FIBRES

Proceedings of 2005 7th International Conference Transparent Optical Networks, 2005., 2005
Photonic crystal fibers exhibit physical features, from various angles, more versatile, intriguing and promising than those pertaining to the conventional optical fibers. Their cross-section can be optimized to obtain single mode operation on a wide wavelength range, soliton propagation, regeneration application, controllable group velocity dispersion.

Photonic-Crystal Fibers

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2003
Photonic crystal fibers guide light by corralling it within a periodic array of microscopic air holes that run along the entire fiber length. Largely through their ability to overcome the limitations of conventional fiber optics—for example, by permitting low-loss guidance of light in a hollow core—these fibers are proving to have a multitude of ...

Graded photonic crystals

Optics Letters, 2005
We present a concept of graded photonic crystals used to enhance the control of light propagation. Gradual modifications of the lattice periodicity make it possible to bend the light at the micrometer scale. This effect is tailored by parametric studies of the isofrequency curves. As a demonstration, we propose a two-dimensional graded photonic crystal

Impedance of photonic crystals and photonic crystal waveguides

Applied Physics Letters, 2004
We develop and demonstrate the concept of impedance for a photonic crystal by generalizing the transverse wave impedance of conventional waveguides. The impedance involves a ratio of transverse fields and power flux. The calculated impedance for a two-dimensional photonic crystal is very well defined using the transfer matrix method.

Photonic crystal fibres

Nature, 2003
Photonic crystal fibres have wavelength-scale morphological microstructure running down their length. This structure enables light to be controlled within the fibre in ways not previously possible or even imaginable. Our understanding of what an optical fibre is and what it does is changing because of the development of this new technology, and a broad

An Introduction to Photonic Crystals

1996
During the past five years, there has emerged a new class of materials called photonic band gap materials or, more simply, photonic crystals. The underlying concept behind these materials stems from early notions by Yablonovitch [1] and John [2]. In a nutshell, the basic idea is to design materials so they can effect the properties of photons in much ...

Photonic crystals and silicon photonics

SPIE Proceedings, 2006
Recent important advances in subwavelength nanostructures offer extraordinary control over the properties of light. We can now manipulate the propagation, storage, and generation of light, as well as practically prescribe its matter interaction properties based on first-principles.

Photonic crystal devices

The 16th Annual Meeting of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, 2003. LEOS 2003., 2004
In this presentation we will discuss photonic crystal lasers and waveguide components. We have demonstrated both suspended membrane and sapphire-bonded photonic crystal microcavity lasers. These devices are optically pumped at and above room temperature.
