Mid-IR heterogeneous silicon photonics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper we discuss silicon-based photonic integrated circuit technology for applications beyond the telecommunication wavelength range. Silicon-on-insulator and germanium-on-silicon passive waveguide circuits are described, as well as the ...

Colloidal Opaline Composites as Throughput‐Scalable, Fully Transparent, and Color‐Tunable Radiative Cooling Exterior Films for Outdoor Photovoltaics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Particular thermal metamaterials are widely used as daytime radiative coolers merely by embedding thermally emissive nanoparticles (NPs) in liquid resins to form scalable, yet highly efficient cooling films in a cost‐effective way. However, randomly dispersed NPs, prevalently used thus far, cause strong scattering, limiting NP content and cooling ...

Single‐Step Synthesis of In‐plane 1T'‐2H Heterophase MoTe2 for Low‐Resistance Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A single‐step CVD method is developed to synthesize seamless in‐plane 1T'‐2H MoTe2 heterophase junctions with precise phase control and uniform large‐area coverage. The resulting transistors, incorporating 1T' MoTe2 contacts and 2H MoTe2 channels, exhibit ultralow contact resistance, offering a scalable solution to the long‐standing challenge of ...

Flip-chip integration of tilted VCSELs onto a silicon photonic integrated circuit.

open access: yesOptics Express, 2016
In this article we describe a cost-effective approach for hybrid laser integration, in which vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are passively-aligned and flip-chip bonded to a Si photonic integrated circuit (PIC), with a tilt-angle ...

All‐Optical Electric Field Sensing with Nanodiamond‐Doped Polymer Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The photoluminescence (PL) of fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) in a polymer‐based capacitor device is sensitive to electric fields. When an external electric field is applied, the PL intensity of the negatively charged nitrogen‐vacancy center (NV‐) increases, while that of the neutrally charged NV center (NV0) decreases.

Photoswitching Conduction in Framework Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This mini‐review summarizes recent advances in state‐of‐the‐art proton and electron conduction in framework materials that can be remotely and reversibly switched on and off by light. It discusses the various photoswitching conduction mechanisms and the strategies employed to enhance photoswitched conductivity.

Photonic integrated circuit implementation of a sub-GHz-selectivity frequency comb filter for optical clock multiplication.

open access: yesOptics Express, 2017
We report a photonic integrated circuit implementation of an optical clock multiplier, or equivalently an optical frequency comb filter. The circuit comprises a novel topology of a ring-resonator-assisted asymmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer in a ...
